Thrasher’s storied career spanned decades—from combat zones in Vietnam to the political halls of Tallahassee and finally to the presidency of his alma mater, FSU. Born in 1943 in Columbia, South Carolina, and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Thrasher graduated from FSU with a business degree in 1965 before serving in the U.S. Army, where he earned two Bronze Stars during the Vietnam War. He later returned to FSU to complete his law degree.

John Thrasher was named the 15th president of Florida State University in 2014. During his tenure, he led the university to new heights in national rankings, launched a $1 billion fundraising campaign, and prioritized inclusion, academic excellence, and campus safety. He retired from the position in 2021, leaving behind a powerful legacy marked by growth and innovation.
“John Thrasher was not just a university president—he was a visionary,” said FSU Board of Trustees Chair Peter Collins. “He saw what FSU could become and made it happen.”
🏛️ A Life of Service: From Capitol to Campus
Before leading FSU, Thrasher served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1992 to 2000, including a term as Speaker of the House. He returned to politics as a Florida Senator from 2009 to 2014. Throughout his political career, Thrasher was known for championing education, veterans’ rights, and public health initiatives.
Governor Ron DeSantis reflected on Thrasher’s life, saying, “John was a decorated combat veteran, served the state well as both Speaker of the House and Florida Senator, and provided great leadership as president of Florida State University. He led a truly remarkable life.”

Thrasher’s passing leaves a deep void in the Florida community, but his legacy continues through the many lives he influenced. He is survived by his wife, Jean; their three children; and eight grandchildren.
